Your time will be enriched by a variety of supplementary discussions and activities. Among these are:
Book runs
We believe that the calling of the scholar requires a love of the printed word. Woven throughout the history of the Rivendell Institute is an insatiable appetite for used books. We felt that the seminar would be incomplete without a day long book run. We leave New Haven at 8:30 am and drive through beautiful Western Massachusetts, returning in time for dinner. Among our regular stops are Gray Matter books [http://greymatterbookstore.com/] and the Montague Book Mill [http://www.montaguebookmill.com/]. All you need is a credit card or cash, an empty bag and a dream!
Christian Heritage Tour
Yale’s is a long and rich spiritual heritage reaching back to its founding in 1701. Hear the stories of philosopher-theologian Jonathan Edwards, frontier missionary David Brainerd, educator-revivalist Timothy Dwight, millionaire-activist Bill Borden and many more on a walking tour of campus.
Special Guests
While the bulk of our discussion will be structured around the four modules described, we will also participate in colloquia and special presentations by a variety of guests. Scholars from Yale as well as Rivendell Staff will broaden our horizons concerning the calling to cultivate a faithful presence in the secular academy.
Beinecke Manuscript Library
A treasure trove of rare books and historical memorabilia including two of the few surviving Gutenberg Bibles and manuscripts and artifacts from Jonathan and Sarah Edwards. This stunning library constructed of translucent marble would be worth a visit even if empty of its collections.
